Why do we love certain food so much? (especially pizza)
Pasta and pizza are so versatile and the kind of food we often crave. It comes in all shapes and sizes, it can be healthy or decadent, simple or exotic. Basically, it can satisfy any kind of food craving.
Ever had food envy?
I read an interesting article the other day about the foods most likely to cause food envy and one of them was pizza. Have you ever had that thing in a restaurant, where you would much rather have what is on someone else’s plate? A report issued by ‘Just Eat’ found that four in ten people usually order the same food as other people simply to avoid feeling jealous! And a quarter has changed their order altogether after seeing a friend’s choice!
The number one main-course food found to cause food envy is pizza and the top dessert is cheesecake. Hmm, now that I’m thinking about cheesecake I really want some!
Are our taste-buds to blame?
Scientists have also now added a new taste to the taste elements. We have known about sweet, salty, sour and bitter – then in 2009, a new savoury taste called Umami was added. But now, a new sixth taste might be joining them which could explain our love of crusty bread and creamy pasta.
A really interesting article published in the Journal of Nutrition challenged the idea that a craving for carbohydrates is driven by sugar, instead claiming that some people can directly detect the taste of starch.
Who would have thought? So next time you are craving pasta and feeling food envy, perhaps it’s your DNA causing you to do so. A good argument, I would say, if any of your ‘Banting’ friends are giving you are a hard time!
The humanity of pasta!
I read a heartwarming story about the comforting nature of pasta, in Italy, Four policemen cooked pasta for an elderly couple after their loneliness and television news caused them such distress they were overheard crying.
The Italian couple, 84 and 94 years old told the police no one had visited them in months and they were deeply saddened by the state of the world. The kind policemen took time out from fighting crime and cooked up a simple dish of pasta, butter and parmesan. The main ingredient – humanity. I have to admit, this story brought a tear to my eye and made me think of all the vulnerable people out there – maybe we could all take time to cook them a meal once in a while, or you could even donate a ready meal now and then.
Everyone deserves to eat good food
At Pasta Factory, we believe that everyone deserves to eat good food. We donate all of our unused stock, cancelled orders and overruns to a great charity, Unlimited Ministry which helps to distribute the food where it’s needed to places like Elim Home and charities for the elderly and vulnerable. I’m going to be covering this in detail in the next blog post, as I really feel passionate about this cause and I think that you, the reader would be interested too – so watch out for the next edition!….
